About the Symposium
Since 1992, the "Tianshan Earthquake International Symposium", co-hosted alternately by the China Earthquake Administration and the Emergency Department of Kazakhstan, has been successfully held 11 times in Almaty, Kazakhstan and Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Through academic exchanges, experts in the field of Earth sciences from Central Asian countries have promoted the development of earthquake disaster reduction causes in the Central Asian region. Meanwhile, China has showcased its remarkable progress in earthquake disaster reduction to the world, enhancing international influence.
In September 2026, the Urumqi Institute of Central Asian Earthquake Research (China Earthquake Administration), the Institute of Geology (China Earthquake Administration), and the Seismological Society of China will jointly host the 12th Tianshan Earthquake International Symposium in Urumqi. The conference invites Earth science scientists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Russia, the United States, and relevant international industry associations to participate.

Symposium Theme
The Tianshan Mountains are one of the most active regions for intracontinental strong earthquakes in the world, renowned as a "natural laboratory" for studying the gestation and occurrence of continental strong earthquakes. Faced with the common challenge of seismic risk, building an open, collaborative, and win-win "Community for Earthquake Safety" is our shared vision.
This international symposium will take"Jointly Building a Community for Earthquake Safety, Ensuring Sustainable Development in the Tianshan" as its theme. We will work with countries around the world to jointly build a high-level international academic exchange platform, promote interdisciplinary integration and international cooperation, deepen the understanding of intracontinental strong earthquake mechanisms, enhance the comprehensive response capacity to regional seismic disasters, and jointly build an open, inclusive, cooperative and win-win Tianshan Community for Earthquake Safety.
